Took a ride over to the Henry’s Fork on Saturday to see if the trout were still hungry for the salmon flies. We floated Warm River to Ashton.
There were plenty of big bugs around but most of the fish seemed to be in a food coma from the last week of gorging themselves. We brought some fish to the boat but nothing spectacular. If you’re heading over before the general opener this weekend, I’d suggest drifting your bugs in the middle of the river away from the banks. The banks have been hammered down there and most fish are still digesting in deep holes. So, find a hole or run and fish it hard. Make sure your bugs are on the bottom too!
Good luck to everyone heading over for the general opener Memorial Day weekend. Please remember the Ranch section will remain closed until the middle of June. Also, there will be A LOT of boats floating through Box Canyon the first week….give everyone their due space, there’s plenty of hungry trout up there for everyone.
If you are in a boat, please respect the wading angler’s as well. There’s nothing worse than wading a river like the Henry’s Fork and having a boat after boat go by with anglers hitting the water you are in. So floaters, if you see someone wading in this weekend, pick up your line for the 10 seconds it takes to float by.
Enough of the lecturing! Get out there and hammer those Henry’s Fork hogs! If you have any questions regarding the Henry’s Fork or any other regional river, drop us an email at stuff@ontheflymag.com .
Cheers,
Andy
