JACKSON HOLE
We have seen some varied conditions over the last 10 days or so. Mother nature has thrown us low 80’s, whiteout snow, and some rain all in that short period. As you might guess, this has proved to hurt the fishing. The cooler temperatures we have seen the last four days have cleared things around Jackson Hole up to the point of consideration.
Yesterday, I ventured up to the Buffalo Fork and found it running somewhat clear, especially on the upper stretches. The fishing was a bit less exciting than the color of the water. I hooked into two “twinkies” in about an hour of wading. It was definitely a day centered around the fishing and not the catching. The Buffalo Valley and surrounding areas are some of my favorite places to fish and hike. There is endless terrain, miles of streams and countless lakes.
This time of year is the time to be out on foot, bike, or horse searching for those “hidden” lakes that almost always bring on a day of solitude in the backcountry. I fished two of those lakes yesterday and brought fish to hand in both. Due to windy conditions, it was exclusively an streamer affair. The naitive Cutties were eager and healthy!
So get yourself a good map and get out there. Watch out for bears while hiking to your destination! I ran into fresh piles of scat yesterday and found numerous tracks from both Grizzlies and Black Bear at the edge of the lakes I was fishing. Make sure you take along some FRESH bear spray….yes, it does go bad!
Runoff should be back in full swing by tomorrow morning. The trend is warming temps, both day and night, for the rest of the week. Expect all freestones to be high and muddy again soon. If you have questions regarding fly fishing in our area, please send us an email via our “Contact” page. Someone will get back to you as soon as possible. We encourage you to visit our sponsor locations as well. They are a great resource!
Cheers,
Andy
