Location: WINTER IS HERE

Sorry for slacking folks!

Winter has definitely set in here in the greater Yellowstone region. Doesn’t mean you can’t fish but if you do you’re gonna need some good long johns!
Yellowstone is closed for fishing and will remain closed until the last weekend in May. Keep in mind there are staggering openings throughout the Park. Everything doesn’t open at the same time. Make your travel plans accordingly.

The Snake here in Jackson is at winter flows and darn cold. It’s possible to find a fish or two in December and January but it wouldn’t be my choice!

If you’re looking for a fix around the Jackson Hole area, try the lower South Fork. The upper wouldn’t be a bad option either but it’s usually a little colder around the dam. You should still be able to pick off a few active browns on a standard nymph package or a dead-drifted or twitched streamer. The Bows, and Cutthroats will be tougher to find this time of year but not impossible. It’s mainly a nymphing thing though. Floating CAN be an option but check in with a local fly shop before you go.

Check back in early February for regional updates. We will be skiing lots of powder, (hoprfully), until then.

The next issue of On the Fly will be out in early April 2008!

Cheers!
